Sobbing pulls Modified and Stock Car Double at I-80. Tilley, Andrews, Ramsey, and Hrabik also Victorious By Anthony Ainslie 7/31/20
Racing action was back on the schedule at I-80 Speedway Friday night as six of the tracks weekly racing classes were on tap. Friday was round five for the NASCAR weekly racing series. The super late model division had the night off, but that did not stop the track from having close and tight racing throughout the night. Jesse Sobbing had a successful night winning in two classes. He began his night by winning the stock car feature. He took the race lead on lap three, and after three cautions and a red flag slowed the race down, Sobbing went to victory lane for the fourth time this year in the stock cars. Eric Rempel and Shane Stutzman were tied for the points lead going into the feature. Rempel took the point lead after a second-place finish and Stutzman ended up fourth. Jed Williams came back from a flat tire on the first lap to take third, and Nick Steier rounded out the top five. Sobbing picked up his second win of the night in the modified feature. Austin Svoboda led the first five laps before Sobbing took the lead as they came to the flag stand with 13 laps remaining. Sobbing led the rest of the way in a caution-free 18-lap main event. Mark Leiting took second while Jacob Hobscheidt worked his way to a third-place finish. Svoboda took fourth with Justin Gregg rounding out the top five. In Fridays Bragging Rights late model main event, it was Dan Jackson taking the early lead. The Ceresco native led the first four laps before defending track champion Jacob Brown took the lead. Two incidents slowed the race down with the second one being the biggest as Eric Wulf Jr.s car ended up on top of Jake Jorgensens car. Both drivers were okay, but they were both out of the race. Right before that, Kale Kosiski climbed onto the outside and rode up it on his side before coming back down. He ran third when that happened, and the incident took him out of contention for the win. When racing resumed, Jacob Brown continued to lead while Andrew Tilley proceeded to run him down. Tilley then caught and passed Brown for the lead with four laps left and held on to capture his second win of the season also becoming the first repeat winner in the Bragging Rights late model class in 2020. Brown had to settle for second while Mike Morton Jr., Dan Jackson and Jake Bridge rounded out the top five. Fridays sport mod feature saw Lincoln native Logan Thomsen lead the first half of the 18-lap finale. Thomsen did everything he could as he held off Matt Andrews and Scott Styskal for multiple laps before Andrews finally got by for the lead with just eight laps to go. Andrews went on to extend his point lead over Styskal as he picked up his second win of the 2020 season at I-80. Styskal took second while Kevin Zeitner worked his way to third. Thomsen ended up fourth while Jacob Swanson finished out the top five. The hobby stock feature was another dominating performance by Luke Ramsey. The defending track champion took the lead from Waybe Haidsiak Jr. on lap five and rand away with the show. Ramsey took his fifth win of the season while Tom Myers took second. Cheyenne Purchase struggled at first but charged her way to a third-place finish at the end of the race. Haidsiak and Hunter Wergin rounded out the top five. The compact feature had a wild battle for the lead. As many as six cars were trading spots back and forth in the top six positions. They even had a couple of moments where they went four abreast down the back stretch and in turns three and four. When the dust settled, Bellevues Evan Hrabik emerged victorious for the first time at I-80 Speedway this season. Bryan and Chris Vannausdle took second and third while Eric Hensley and Anthony Clark finished out the top five.
