Kay Scores Unforgettable Victory in East Series Debut at 34. By Anthony Ainslie 6/5/21
The Haulin with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East Series did not disappoint in the tours first visit to West Burlington, Iowas 34 Raceway Saturday night. Round three for the East series was at a new venue for the tour. After the race at 34 Raceway was rained out the year before, it was a gorgeous summer night in West Burlington as 23 cars made the trip. Top qualifier Charlie McKenna started on the pole for the 30-lap main event. However, it was Dave Eckrich jumping out of the opening lap scramble to lead. One lap later, Richie Gustin snuck around on the bottom to take command. Gustin led when the race went under caution for the first time for spinout in turn one. When racing resumed, Gustin led while Todd Cooney closed in and challenged for the lead. Cooney was ready to take the lead, but a caution came out with only eight laps remaining. This set up an unbelievable dash to the finish. Cooney caught up to Gustin and took the lead with six laps left while Justin Kay slipped back to fifth after restarting third. Kay was quick to recover and got back to third with three laps remaining. As the pack came off turn two, Kay got the run he needed and rode the outside line of turns three and four to take the race lead with two to go. From there, Kay separated himself from the rest of the pack, and the Wheatland, Iowa native took home his first East Series win of the season and the fourth win of his career. Also, with point leader Jeff Aikey not making the start, Kay officially took over the championship points lead with the win. Todd Cooney would have to settle for second while Dave and Andy Eckrich took third and fourth, and Richie Gustin rounded out the top five. The East Series will now take the weekend off, but the Malvern Bank West Series returns to action with a Saturday night showdown at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa on June 12th. Then the East series will have a big Iowa tripleheader ending with a big East/West battle at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa on the 19th. The two nights before that, the East Series has races at the Eldon Raceway in Eldon on the 17th followed by their second visit to the Davenport Speedway in Davenport on the 18th.
