Martin Scores Spring Meltdown Sprint Finale in late race Pass. Grabowski Dominates Modified Feature By Anthony Ainslie 4/3/21
Saturday night marked the second and final day of action for I-80 Speedway’s first weekend of the new season, and a pair of familiar faces returned to victory lane. The Malvern Bank 360 sprint cars were in action for the second night while the modifieds took to the track after the sport mods ran the night before. Both sprint cars and modifieds had fields of 24 cars make the trip to compete for the big money at the end of the night. At the start of the 25-lap sprint car feature, Jody Rosenboom made a daring move on the outside of turn two to take the lead, but a two-car wreck in turn four brought out the caution and called back the start. Racing resumed, and Chris Martin Jumped out to the lead. The Ankeny, Iowa native led until the red flag came out for Austin Miller who flipped in turn one. On the ensuing restart, Terry McCarl got around Martin for the lead right before the caution came out for a wreck on the front stretch. From there, McCarl extended his advantage over the rest of the field. However, in the closing laps, McCarl had trouble getting around slower lapped cars which gave Martin the chance to catch up. Martin used a lapped car to make the winning pass in turns three and four with only three laps to go. From that point Martin ran away and scored the win. It was his second career win at I-80 Speedway. Jason Martin snuck by for second while McCarl had to settle for third. Cody Ledger took fourth while Matt Juhl rounded out the top five. In the modified feature, Beatrice native Jordan Grabowski jumped out to the lead and was never challenged throughout the 20-lap feature. Travis Hatcher was the only caution of the race when he got into the turn two wall on lap five. Meanwhile, Grabowski cruised to a popular victory while Mike Densberger took second. Shane Hiatt put together a strong third place finish while Justin Gregg and Shane DeMey finished out the top five.
