Pospisil and Leighton take Spring Meltdown Double Features to kick off 2021
By Anthony Ainslie

A pair of Nebraskans took the checkered flag Friday night as the Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series opened up its 2021 racing season.
The West Series began the new racing season at its home track, I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska as the track also started its 2021 racing season with the Spring Meltdown. A field of 27 late models from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota made the trip out to I-80 for the season opener. The format for Friday’s race was different than a typical race night. After four heat races, the field was divided into two fields for a pair of 15-lap features.
In the first feature, JC Wyman and Brian Kosiski swapped the race lead back and forth in the opening laps. This allowed defending series champion Tad Pospisil who ultimately used the bottom of the race track to power around Kosiski with nine laps to go.
Pospisil pulled away during the second half of the race and cruised to the $1500 paycheck. Brian and Andrew Kosiski took second and third while Ben Schaller and JC Wyman finished out the top five.
The second feature saw former Rookie of the Year Josh Leonard break out to the lead. The Gibbon, Nebraska driver led the first three laps before the only caution of the race came out for Zach Zeitner who hit the wall as he came out of turn two.
On the restart, Bill Leighton Jr. and Jesse Sobbing charged at Leonard and passed him on both sides. From there, Leighton took the lead while Sobbing ran second. Like Pospisil in the race before, Leighton pulled away and rode out the distance to score the win. Jesse Sobbing took second while Leonard finished third. Todd Cooney put together a strong fourth place finish, and Corey Zeitner rounded out the top five.
The Malvern Bank West Series will finish out the Spring Meltdown weekend on Saturday with a big $4,000 to win main event at I-80 Speedway. After that, the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Series will get their season underway with a big Iowa Thursday-Friday weekend with stops at Davenport Speedway in Davenport and the series’ debut at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.
